Motorola PEBL U6 Unlocked Cell Phone with Video Player/Recorder--International Version with No Warranty (Celery Green)

Motorola's PEBL U6 is the second model in Motorola's high-end "four-letter word" line, following the super popular RAZR V3. The PEBL takes some of the same materials and technologies used in the RAZR, and packages them into a completely different kind of clamshell handset. While the RAZR is all about thin, sharp angles, the PEBL is more about design, making use of soft curves and smooth lines throughout.

The graphite black finish on the smooth, rounded exterior of the PEBL U6 manages to appear very glossy while still having a visual texture to it. The effect is very cool in person, but the downside is that the phone is an absolute magnet for fingerprints. But that's just the cost of high fashion, isn't it?

The PEBL's biggest claim to fame is perhaps not its shape and look, but its unique opening mechanism. A series of custom hinges, a dampening device, and some magnets allow the PEBL U6 to be opened up one-handed in a very smooth, elegant manner. When holding the device, you simply use your thumb to pull the top cover towards the bottom of the device a bit, which releases the magnetic latch that keeps the spring-loaded opening mechanism at bay. At that point you simply move your thumb out of the way and let the spring do its job. The motion is smooth and slow enough for the device to maintain its balance.

Once open, the PEBL's unusual keypad is ready for use. The directional controller and its center select button are very typical of mobile phones, but the rest of the keypad builds on some of the unique design elements we saw in the RAZR's keypad. The PEBL's keypad and softkeys are completely flat. The actual buttons are hidden behind a single sheet of metal that has a bit of give to it, allowing finger pressure to make its way to the switches underneath. Thin strips of translucent material let light filter in from behind, just as they do on the RAZR's keypad. The net result is a very distinct-looking keypad that probably sacrifices a little too much functionality in the name of fashion. Individual keys are simply much easier to find and press, even if they don't look nearly as sharp.

The inner workings of the PEBL U6 seem to be stock Motorola. The handset comes in two variations, each of which supports three GSM frequency bands and EDGE data. The North American version supports the 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 Mhz bands. The internal display is a 262k-color unit with a pixel resolution of 176x220. The battery should be good for over 6 and a half hours of talk time, or up to as long as 10 days of standby time according to Motorola. Bluetooth support more than makes up for a lack of infrared connectivity. The only aspect that seems a bit dated is the PEBL's VGA camera. For a high-end handset like the PEBL, you certainly would expect more resolution in the camera.

Other highlights include 5 MB of internal storage that can be used for MP3 or MIDI ringtones, photos and video clips, and downloaded Java games and applications. The addition of speaker-independent voice dialing and voice commands are welcome, and the PEBL's relatively low weight of 3.7 ounces (110 g) makes it quite pocketable.

Motorola's PEBL U6 is a unique handset. Where it goes, stares and longing gazes will follow. It might not have the full range of high-end features inside, but for the see-and-be-seen crowd, it probably has everything to get the job done.

Customer Review: A cute cheap phone

I break my phones without blinking so when i broke my LG vu, I was done with buying expensive phones. This phone is great. It's unlocked so all you need to do is put in your simcard and your phone is ready. The hardware is great. It looks adorable and the slide to flip action makes me happy ^_^. I only use my phone for calling and texting so i didn't mind that the internet won't work. Saves me the extra bits it would cost if i accidentally presed the web button.

If you broke your phone and you don't want to buy a used phone. get this one. great price for a working phone.

The green color on the web page has a more 'sage' look, the actual phone is slightly more yellow-green, and metallic, which came as a disappointment, however, I really like this phone - it is a beautiful design inside and out. I have only used standard texting and call features, but it is very robust, easy to use and to notch design.

Customer Review: Worst Phone Ever Made!!

Unfortunately I own this POS! I should not have fell into the trap but I did. It randomly shuts off even with a full charge on the battery. It also makes phone calls on its own to people in my phonebook. This thing is possessed. I have complained about it a couple of times and was basically told to deal with it or I could buy a new phone. If I could rate it a zero I would. BEWARE BEFORE YOU BUY.

Customer Review: My last Moto

My last Motorola phone was a Dynatac 8000G, and it worked great for years. A few months ago, I bought a Z6m and now hate not just the phone, but Motorola. (The Z6m is the CDMA variant; I've observed that all sorts of GSM phones regularly cause interference, violating US FCC rules part 15, and therefore unlawful to operate.)

The first thing that infuriated me was the speakerphone. It isn't loud enough to use in a moving car, even when holding it near my head. (Under the same conditions, my old Nokia worked just fine, allowing me to keep both hands on the steering wheel.) The MP3 player can play plenty loud through the same speaker, indicating to me that it's not the fault of the speaker, but an intentional shortcoming designed to sell Motorola's hands-free car kit.

Even while using all the power-saving options, I still can't get a second day's use out of the phone before recharging, and that's with a brand-new battery. My Nokia gave me a week.

The phone supports adding a memory card only up to 2GiB because it uses FAT16 and not FAT32. It would be nice to offer a non-Microsoft file system, if only Motorola could get the disk interface right.

Plug in a USB cable to a computer and it charges the phone, and allows access to the memory (card if installed or main if not) or the modem.

See something you want to take a picture of? Hold down the button and wait. It launches the camera application, so wait some more. The moment is long gone.

I went somewhere with no service and quickly learned that I couldn't even set the clock to the right time.

The designs of many parts of this thing were outsourced and clearly not managed competently.

This is the last Motorola product I buy. I feel ripped off, and hope to soon replace the phone and punch any of its designers in the nose.

Customer Review: My adorable little Italian pumpkin -- a great phone, too.

I bought the Motorola Pebl because it seemed to have loads of features, all while looking so cute.

To try and avoid any problems since there isn't a warranty on international Moto phones used in the US, I chose to get a new Pebl. It came in original packaging and pristine as you would expect for new. The charger was made to work in Europe, but it did come with an adapter and works as well as anything. The language was set to Italian, since that's one of the countries where they still sell them new. Changing it to English was simple, but that's most likely because I've had many Motos and am used to what's where on the menu. The user guide is in many languages, including English, and easy to use.

As far as how the phone works in general, it is very useful and reliable. It gets the best signal of any phone I've ever had, and I've never had trouble hearing anyone or getting calls. The battery life is great, it can easily go four days without a charge, and usually I don't charge it more than once a week.

For the price, its features are just great. The interface is clean, typical Moto. It has bluetooth, although I've never used it and can't say if it's reliable in that way. The camera is perfect for capturing quick moments - those times when you want a picture to remember something, but you don't have the or forgot it - both in still and in video. It has a voice recorder, good for quick notes. It comes with loads of good, preloaded ringtones that sound rich and get your attention. The couple megabites worth of memory is plenty for about twenty, 30-second videos or about 90 full-sized pictures. You an download and upload pics, sounds, and videos onto the Pebl, all you need is MobilePhoneTools 4.0 or higher, which I bought on Amazon for less than $5 including shipping. Also, the spring-open feature is kind of a neat little "trick." When you slide the front of it down, and release your grip on the front, it pops open to reveal the smooth inside of the little clamshell.

Despite being reliable and having many features, it does have a couple problems. First is the fact that it cannot send or receive files via MMS, which may have something to do with the fact that it thinks it's roaming (doesn't affect your charges, the Pebl is just made to think it's from Italy), but it could just be a problem with my pumpkin. Another problem is not having expandable memory, which, combined with a megapixel camera, would make this phone perfect.

Overall, my Moto Pebl has been an enjoyable and reliable phone. I absolutely love it, and have gotten many complements on its bright and fun color. If a good camera and expandable memory are top on your priorities, but you want the cute Pebl look, I would suggest the Moto Pebl U9, about twice the cost of the U6 but with improved features. Personally, the U9 will probably be my next phone because the Pebls are just too great to not get another one. :)

Customer Review: Fatally flawed

Motorola PEBL U6 Pumpkin Orange Phone (Unlocked Intl. Version) no U.S. Warranty The phone is fatally flawed. Fully charged it could only make two calls before it warned of low battery and then stopped working. This happened every day, no matter how long it had been charged for.

While it is possible I got a phone with a defective battery, I would avoid this phone given other complaints of short battery life (see Amazon reviews of this phone in other colors).

Motorola PEBL U6 Unlocked Cell Phone--International Version with No Warranty (Graphite Black)

Motorola's PEBL U6 is the second model in Motorola's high-end "four-letter word" line, following the super-popular RAZR V3. The PEBL takes some of the same materials and technologies used in the RAZR and packages them into a completely different kind of clamshell handset. While the RAZR is all about thin, sharp angles, the PEBL is more about design, making use of soft curves and smooth lines throughout.

The graphite black finish on the smooth, rounded exterior of the PEBL U6 manages to very glossy while still having a visual texture to it. The effect is very cool in person, but the downside is that the phone is an absolute magnet for finger prints. But that's just the cost of high fashion, isn't it?

Once open, the PEBL's unusual keypad is ready for use. The directional controller and its center select button are very typical of mobile phones, but the rest of the keypad builds on some of the design elements we saw in the RAZR's keypad. The PEBL's keypad and softkeys are completely flat. The actual buttons are hidden behind a single sheet of metal that has a bit of give to it, allowing finger pressure to make its way to the switches underneath. Thin strips of translucent material let light filter in from behind, just as they do on the RAZR's keypad. The net result is a very distinct-looking keypad that probably sacrifices a bit too much in the name of fashion. Individual keys are simply much easier to find and press, even if they don't look nearly as sharp.

Other highlights include 5 MB of internal storage that can be used for MP3 or MIDI ringtones, photos and video clips, and downloaded Java games and applications. The addition of speaker-independent voice dialing and voice commands is welcome, and the PEBL's relatively low weight of 3.7 ounces (110 g) makes it quite pocketable.

I order this phone NEW from amazon. I actually can't say anything about the phone itself, because I didn't get to use it at all. First of all I ordered a NEW phone and the one I received was defenitely not new. It had all the plastic sheets on it, but it was udes before. So I returned it within 5 minutes of receiving it. I am very dissappointed with amazon. I don't think I'll order anything from them again.

And the phone doesn't support the my faves plan from T-mobile. Well, just the graphics of the phone doesn't support it....so you may be able to call your faves for free, you just won't have the symbols on the screen....which is a big turn off for me.

I purchased this unlocked PEBL phone for my daughter to use while she was studying in Greece, so once there she could buy a Greek SIM card, with a Greek phone number, and avoid roaming charges from using her US iPhone. She was still in the US when it arrived, and the PEBL came with an international charger and manuals, but did not come with a SIM card. This phone needed an inserted SIM card before it would allow her access to any setup menus, or to try it out to make calls, so she used the SIM card from her iPhone temporarily and it worked fine. She was easily able to bluetooth sync the PEBL to her MacBook and transfer her contacts list using iSync, and to make calls on the ATT network. Once she was in Greece, the phone has worked great with a Greek SIM card.

From day one these phones were a problem. They were listed as new but when I turn them on there were a history of use. I informed the seller and they were willing for me to return them but I decided to just accept a free leather case being that they looked new. BIG MISTAKE! Within 3 months I had to purchase 2 new phones. Problems include dead LCD, batteries not holding charge, phone turning off in the middle of calls and the list goes on.

This phone is pretty awesome, especially considering the low price for a touchscreen phone. The touch screen is nice and has a stylus that comes with. The phone is a really nice looking phone that I am glad to say I own mainly because no one else I know has it. I'm unable to give reviews on its processing speed venturing online since I do not use that feature very much where I am here in Europe but the main thing that breaks my heart about this phone is that it is not text friendly. Because of that I will have to get me another phone. The touch screen is great but the qwerty pad on the screen has very very tiny letters which slows down the process.

Also the camera is very sensitive to movement while taking pictures but I'm pleased with video recording on it because I'm able to record videos on it up to 30 minutes if I wanted to. I would say it's a decent smart phone but my main reason for 3 stars is the qwerty on it. other than that I will continue to use this phone for other reasons.

Its a phone. It makes calls, it sends text messages, and can even take some pictures. If you're sharp, you can upload a custom ringtone to the phone.

Can be pretty slow...typing a text message takes a while, since the text doesn't show up for half a second to a second. Address book searching and scrolling is similar; don't press a button a few times to scroll down one thing, you will end up at the bottom.

Customer Review: Maybe an OK phone...

This phone isn't what I expected it to be. The touch screen began to get really annoying after a while because I kept having to pull out its pen all the time. Buttons are really small so you cant really use your fingers. Takes a really long time to respond to the 4 press buttons (end, answer, web, etc.). It is not worth what you pay for. On the plus side, its got some cool features like real player and card picture. But overall, it might hit the OK mark if you like touch screen phones.

This is one of the best phones I have ever come across. Its small and easy to carry in your pocket while having tons of useful functions.

The PDA function is very useful and easy to insert dialog into.

It doesn't come with a lot of memory, but an easy (and cheap) update of a 2GB memory card makes it a useful MP3 player.

The only real problem I have come across is that it is near impossible to find a good case for it. Like I said, it easily fits in your pocket but you may want to get a case to protect the LCD screen. Cases are very hard to come across due to its shape. Other than that, this phone would rate a "5".

The V3i DG features the famous RAZR slim shape, includes an anodized aluminum gold finish that reflects your impeccable taste, and its music player runs on Apple's popular iTunes software.

Design
At .55 inches thick, the RAZR V3i is virtually the same thickness as the original RAZR. And like the original RAZR, the phone's design takes the standard clamshell form factor to the next level with an impressive, fully-anodized aluminum construction. A large 176 x 220 color display with 262,000 colors dominates the inside of the top cover. The outside cover of the handset sports a supplementary 96 x 80 full-color display that can display caller ID pictures, time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The 1.23 megapixel camera lens is housed above this display. Up/down buttons are placed on the left side for volume control.

Most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's backlit control pad, which is precision cut from a single sheet of nickel-plated copper alloy. A mini-USB port is provided, which, while useful for fast data transfer, can also be used with compatible USB stereo headsets. Note that the phone does not have a standard 2.5mm headset jack.

Calling Features
The RAZR V3i's internal phone book can hold up to 1000 contacts while the phone's picture ID system allows you to assign pictures to your most common callers. The phone also supports polyphonic ringtones as well as MP3 ringers, allowing you to use portions of your favorite songs to alert you to incoming calls. For times when you want to be discreet, there's a vibrating alert. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear while voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. Speaker-independent technology allows any speaker to dial numbers with the voice dialing system. And because the RAZR V3i is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total handsfree operation.

Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The RAZR V3i is a messaging and wireless Internet powerhouse. Support is built in for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, sound and video via messages. There's also a built-in Web browser for mobile Web downloads and browsing via your carrier's GPRS-based data service. If you need email on the go, the V3i comes with an email client that supports IMAP, POP3, and SMTP email standards. iTap text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the RAZR V3i including a calculator with currency converter, a calendar and an alarm clock. The phone can also be used with Motorola's Mobile Phone Tools PC application to manage and synchronize contacts, calendar and other data with your PC.

Imaging and Entertainment
The V3i's 1.3 megapixel camera bridges the gap between phones and quality digital cameras. The digital zoom-enabled camera is also designed to capture video. You can even print your shots on a Bluetooth-enabled printer. Embedded animated screensavers and full screen wallpapers are built-in so you can set up the RAZR V3i to suit your tastes. The phone supports games, as well as gaming connectivity via Bluetooth.

Into bringing your music with you everywhere you go? With the V3i D & C's hot-swappable MicroSD memory card slot, you can stylishly take all of your favorite music with you. Your music library is now limited only by how much memory you bring along. I bought this phone from Neiman Marcus when it first came out, and it's been about a year now and I have no complaints. It's an awesome phone, both in function and design. I absolutely love it and highly recommend it, especially for those fashionistas out there! It's definitely worth buying, in particular now that it is at half the price it was at when it first came out.
