Customer Review: A small step forward for Sony
I got the W980 after my trusty W810i bit the dust. And why did it die? Because Sony insists on using their crappy 12-copper pin input/output/power port. After 2 years of being in a pocket, this port gets tarnished and requires daily cleaning. Or in my case the copper pin fell off and I could no longer charge my phone! But at least Sony made these copper pins much Larger in the W980. Cleaning these suckers should be a breeze! The W980 is great for those like me who need both a phone and a mp3 player. I don't need it for extensive texting or web browsing. And the fixed 8GB memory (no SD card here) is plenty since I don't watch videos on a 2-inch screen or need to store my entire collection of mp3s. It sounds/looks great and is a bit expensive for what you get. No new ground being broken here (looks like they saved that for the xperion).

Customer Review: Amazon the greatess!
I love using AMAZON for delivery I trust them and the product never have any problems.
Customer Review: Great phone, but poor quality
I have had the w580i for 1 year, 2 months now and I have enjoyed using the phone and most of its features. However, during that time I have experienced several quality issues. One of them (the ear speaker died) was probably isolated to my unit. But I also had my keypad crack twice. The cracked keypad seems to be a common issue with this model, just search online about it. I had to send in the phone twice for warranty repairs. Now, the left soft keys (select/back) have stopped working. Another search revealed this to also be a common flaw also. My warranty has run out, so Sony Ericsson will not fix this. Fortunately, there is a workaround by pushing hard on the area between the navigation keys and the LCD screen (where there is either the 'W' logo or the at&t logo), then the keys will work.
The bottom line though is that this phone has some serious quality flaws and therefore I do not recommend purchasing this model anymore. I give it 2-stars since the phone is still a very nice slider design with excellent software/interface.

Sony Ericsson W580i Unlocked Cell Phone with 2 MP Camera, MP3/Video Player, Memory Stick Micro Slot--International Version with No Warranty (White)
Sony Ericsson shakes things up with its new quad-band W580i Walkman phone, introducing an innovative "shake to shuffle" feature that randomly chooses another song stored on your phone with just a flick of the wrist. This thin, slider-style phone also features a 2-megapixel camera/camcorder, fast Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR connectivity with music streaming, Memory Stick Micro expansion, Web browser for viewing full Internet sites, email access, an FM radio with RDS, and EDGE data support. This unlocked cell phone can be used with a GSM network service provider and it provides quad-band connectivity (850/900/1800/1900 MHz). It does not come with a SIM card, and it requires that you provide a SIM card for usage with your selected service provider.
The slim slider W580i measures just 0.55 inches thin and includes a brightly colorful QVGA screen and dedicated music controls. |
The W580i Walkman phone offers a full-function digital audio player that's compatible with MP3 and AAC files. The front of this slider phone includes dedicated music control buttons, and it includes Sony Ericsson's innovative "shake to shuffle" feature. With Shake control activated, press and hold the Walkman key and flick your wrist. A vibration lets you know that the track has been changed--a new song from your current playlist is randomly selected and automatically played.
With the TrackID service, you can identify any song that you can hear by just recording a snippet of sound using the microphone. After sending the file for recognition, you'll have the name, artist and album sent to your phone. Other Walkman features include MegaBass enhancement for added depth of sound, a flight mode that lets you keep listening to tunes with the phone's network connectivity turned off, and Disc2Phone software for easy transfer of song files between phone and PC. It also includes a built-in FM radio with RDS, which displays the name of the currently playing song (when tuned to compatible radio stations).
This phone provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity with EDR (enhanced data rate), and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and audio/video remote control. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. Send your latest photos directly to your blog. |
You can even take your favorite tracks to the track with the W580i, which will count your steps, your calories and monitor your running speed/distance/time with the integrated motion sensor. Your workout results are stored in your phone so you can monitor your progress.
The phone also ships with a built-in email client with support for POP3 and IMAP4 protocols, while the included Access NetFront Web Browser allows you to surf full HTML web sites. It also supports RSS feeds, allowing you to use your phone to view up-to-the-minute news and other content from selected Web sites and blogs. Just subscribe to the feed and let it come to you. Support is built in for sending and receiving text, video, graphics and sound via messages.
The phone also supports the SyncML PC synchronization standard. This means the phone can be used with the included Sony Ericsson Sync Station software, which lets you synchronize your Microsoft Outlook calendar, contacts, notes and tasks on your PC with the phone.

Vital Statistics
The W580i weighs 3.32 ounces and measures 3.9 x 1.85 x 0.55 inches. Its 930 mAh lithium-polymer battery is rated at up to 9 hours of talk time, and up to 370 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the 850/900/1800/1900 GSM/GPRS/EDGE frequencies.
Customer Review: Not for Texts
I originally picked this design because i enjoy the ease in which you can navigate through the Sony Ericsson models. Being able to create your own shortcut keys is a nice feature. However, if you are a big text messager, like me, then you'll likely want to look elsewhere. They keypad is incredibly small for starters. Thumb cramps take no time to develop. Also the keys themselves have an overall tendency to crack with overuse. I had my phone for maybe 5 months before at least 3 of they numbers cracked in half. A big draw back for sure.
Customer Review: Walkman FM radio +++ but small keypad
I bought this phone because it had Walkman FM radio, too. This phone is pretty (I got the PINK one), lightweight, has lots of whiz-bang menu selections, but doesn't wow or impress me as much as the Samsung A737 or Samsung A747 models which I bought for my children. I listen to the radio a lot, more than MP3s and really thought this feature would be cool. If you like effects, it has 16 settings for flashing light patterns customized for every caller. It takes a day to find out how to set the patterns in all the menus....
The keypad is a bit on the small side, and feel like dry plastic. It's OK for me because I have small hands, but I don't think a man would enjoy using the small, non-descript keys. The letters on the keys are hard to see being so small. When I enter text, I still have to look--er, squint--at the keypad. I don't pay for texting service, so it's not a huge hassle, but if you text, I can't imagine it would be much fun.
When I enter an phone number in the address book, it doesn't put hyphens between the area code, prefix, and last four digits. That's not fatal, but a pet peeve, and makes it difficult for me to figure out the numbers as they come up.
The M2 Memory Stick is not common, but Sony Ericsson uses it. They supply a 512MB one. Buying one with more memory will not be cheap. The access slot is on the top. It took me a while to figure out how to open the little, flat plastic door. Which side to open? It doesn't have a flap, can't open with a fingernail, so I use an unfolded paper clip or other similar-sized object to pry it open.
You need the wired earphones to have FM service. If you like radio, it's just one more thing to carry around. The sound quality is EXCELLENT on this wire unit and the ear buds very comfy. It also works as "handsfree" phone device if you don't want to do Bluetooth.
The display, although narrow, is bright and sharp. The sound is good, and it interfaces well with my Bluetooth earpiece and Palm device. The phone is very lightweight and slim. I dropped it a few times but the case didn't scratch or crack. The pink IS pretty, and has little red "jewels" between the number keys (other color models have different color jewels). The speaker phone option works well and is clear to hear. The slider is a little unusual to work at first, but works very nicely. Sony Ericsson phone support is SUPER, too.

Use the pictures you take as wallpaper to dress up your phone to your different tastes.

The dual function keyboard--full alpha-numeric (e.g. QWERTY) text input combined with one hand phone usability--lets you quickly respond to email and text messages. The P1i is a 3G data-enabled device, compatible with third-generation mobile networks that offer broadband-like transfer speeds--up to 384 kbps--providing quick and easy access to audio and video streaming, Web surfing, multimedia messaging, and email wherever you go. This phone includes a secondary camera lens on the front that lets you use the P1i as a video phone. During a video call (placed to a compatible phone on a compatible network), you can see a live video stream of the person you're talking to and they can see you. When the only choice around is GSM, the P1i can hop onto a GPRS data link. Alternatively, you can also switch to a Wi-Fi connection (802.11b) when you find an available wireless LAN/hotspot.
Always being connected while on the move is now a normal part of working life. The Sony Ericsson P1i gives you the ability to handle your corporate or personal emails, contacts and calendar wherever you are. It offers support for a broad range of push email services including Exchange ActiveSync and BlackBerry Connect and allows for remote wiping of email and PIM data--something critical in the event of the phone being stolen or misplaced.
Because the P1i is a Symbian smartphone, it features solid integration of phone, contacts, and calendar applications that can be easily synchronized with other devices and services, making it very easy to bring your office with you wherever you roam. Easily edit documents you receive as attachments to emails, or that you have stored on memory card. The P1i lets you read and edit documents on the move, whether Microsoft Word, PowerPoint or Excel. In addition to USB and Bluetooth connectivity, this phone also has an infrared receiver for data synchronization.
The 3.2 megapixel camera takes great shots to store or share via Picture Blogging and is also a useful tool for work purposes. It does away with the need to collect stacks of business cards when traveling. Just take a close-up shot of a business card and the card scanner transfers the contact details directly into the phonebook.
The P1i shines as a music player, offering a great way to listen and organize your digital tunes on the go. The in-phone media player supports video and audio playback--supported audio formats include MP3 and AAC. Catch the latest news via the on-board FM Radio or stream mobile TV direct to the large screen. Customer Review: Improved with the Latest OS Upgrade
General: I have now had this phone for 18 months, and although not perfect, it is the best phone or even PDA that I have used. I am pretty hard on PDA's and break them in about a year - so far so good with this phone. It is unlocked and I run it on T-Mobile pay as you go (very cheap and as good as AT&T for service here in Indiana). Initially, the phone would occasionally drain its battery after only an hour or two. I discovered that using Swiss Manager to close running applications was a good work around to prevent this. Recently, I upgraded the operating system to the latest version, and it seems to have corrected this issue. I have had no other stability issues. The screen can be seen in sunlight, but I would like if it were a bit larger in size. Battery life depends on closeness to a cell tower and as I am in a fringe area, I only get about 3 days before I run out of juice (using it a few minutes per day). Running the music player, I get about 5 hours, but the camera will drain the battery in an hour or two!
Software: Software to edit Microsoft Word documents and spreadsheets comes included. The included calendar, alarm clock and address book are a bit more versatile than those found with the Palm OS. There is lots of software available for this phone [..]. I have installed the Big Encyclopedia that runs on Mobipocket, but it is apparently to big to install automatically the usual way, so I used the Media Manager to install it on a memory card. I have also installed a dictionary, a password manager and a better calculator than comes with it. I also recommend Swiss Manager when you need a more powerful file manager.
Keyboard: I like it. There is also a touch screen keyboard that can be used.
Camera: Outdoors it takes 3 Meg pictures that look as if they came from a dedicated digital camera, although they look a bit better re-sized to 2 Meg size. Indoors the results are very noisy and good only if you are desperate.
Other: The phone uses a Sony connector for headphones, but cheap adapters for a standard stereo plug are available. The CPU runs a little slow for the demands of the phone, so sometimes there is a little wait to load software. As with other phones, the FM radio needs the headphones attached to act as an antenna, but then reception is good. Unfortunately, Sony uses their micro-MemoryStick (which is hard to find) instead of an SD card.
Customer Review: best phone i ever seen.
this is the best phone i ever bought in my life.
this phone have each and every thing u want.
